How to Build a Campfire and Fire Safety Tips

Camping is a great way to connect with nature and enjoy the great outdoors. And what’s camping without a campfire? However, building a campfire requires some responsibility to ensure everyone stays safe. Here are some fire safety tips that everyone should follow when planning to build a campfire.

Choose the Right Spot

When building a campfire, it is important to choose the right spot. Look for a flat area, free from low-hanging branches, and away from your tent, gear, and anything else that can catch fire.

Prepare the Fire Pit

After you have found the right spot, it’s time to prepare the fire pit. Clear an area about 10 feet wide around the pit. Use rocks or metal fire rings to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.

Gather Firewood

Gather firewood only from the ground. You don’t want to damage any live trees or branches. Collect small sticks, twigs, and tinder to start the fire, and gradually add larger logs once the fire is going.

Start the Fire

Build a teepee-shaped structure with the kindling in the center and some space for air to circulate. Start the tinder on fire, and blow gently to get the fire going. Once the fire is going, you can add larger logs.

Extinguish the Fire

Never leave the fire unattended. When you’re ready to leave or go to bed, make sure the fire is fully extinguished. Pour water on the fire, and use a shovel to stir the ashes until the fire pit is cool to the touch.

Fire Safety Tips

Enjoy your camping trip, but be responsible when building a campfire. Follow these tips to prevent wildfires and ensure everyone stays safe.
